DEAN'S COUNCIL MINUTES: Sept. 11, 2012


I.                       Faculty Senate

The Faculty Senate, on Monday evening, indicated interest in establishing a Libraries Committee.

 
II.                    Classics


The Classics Department has submitted a list of journals they’d like the Libraries to retain.

 
III.                 President and Provost


The President and Provost will meet with Libraries faculty on Monday, Oct. 29 at 3:30 p.m. in the Dean’s Conference Room.


IV.                 Risk Assessment

 
A workshop is being held on Wednesday, Sept. 12, for designates from the Libraries to review institutional risks and opportunities.  

 
V.                    Distance Ed

 As per the Provost’s Monday letter to campus, Mara is now chairing the leadership team for Distance Education. Programs in queue: a certificate in Public Health, and later a master’s degree in public health.
 

VI.                 ARL Membership

 Nancy explored the idea of an initial inquiry into UVM Libraries becoming a member of the Association of Research Libraries. The Libraries will continue to explore the first-steps as outlined by the ARL. Alison, Albert, Sarah and Nancy will work together to make first contact.

 
VII.              Staff and Comp Time

 Exempt staff, according to University policy, are not eligible for official compensatory time.

 
VIII.           Guest Borrower’s Fee

The current guess borrower’s fee is $42. Sarah suggested rounding it down to $40. The Council agreed.


IX.                 Special Collections Party

 
All are encouraged to attend the 50th Anniversary SC Event, featuring a talk about “The Value of Special Collections in the 21 Century,” by Mark Dimunation of the Library of Congress. Billings Marsh Lounge, Friday, September 21, at 5:30 p.m.   

 
X.                    CATQuest

 
Usability testing begins next week.

 A CATQuest launch event will take place in the lobby of B/H on Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 1-3 p.m. Students and patrons will be treated to coffee and cider donuts, as well as give-a-ways and CATQuest demos. All are welcome to join in the fun.

XII.              E-thesis

Paul is following up with Grad College to confirm the status of what is and isn’t required for submission of thesis and dissertations in electronic format.  

XIII.            Updates

·         Staff Apperception pizza party will be held in the Staff Lounge at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. Bring your appetite!

·         The I&IS Conference Room has been soundproofed.

·         Daisy and Tom are working on a video project about the VDNP.

·         Since the removal of ashtrays out front, the smoke situation is greatly improved.

·         The bad smell in some Dana offices is still being sorted out.

·         A four-year contract between Dana, Central Vermont Medical Center and FAHC is being negotiated. Once completed, will be the largest of its kind.

About that VTDNP video - to add Sally to the credits: It's Sally Blanchard, Daisy Benson and Tom McMurdo that have been working on the video about the VTDNP (or VDNP ... VT Digital Newspaper Project). Coming soon!
