Integrative Health Exhibit at Dana

 “Integrative Health: Local Resources, Luminaries and Community Connections” spotlights the research and publications of UVM professors Helene Langevin, MD and Ge Wu, Ph.D. 

The UVM College of Medicine is a member of the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Health, joining 50 other academic centers to further understanding and knowledge in integrative health.

The exhibit defines integrative health and the overall goal of academic health centers to foster an exchange of constructive ideas, bridging Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) and Conventional Medicine.  The UVM College of Medicine collaborates with the Laura Mann Center to help educate all interested health care providers and medical students about the integration of alternative and allopathic medicine.  Also highlighted in the exhibit is the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the federal government’s lead agency for scientific research on CAM.

The Broadside Project & SC 50th Anniversary

Reception May 4, 2012, 5-6:30 pm Bailey/Howe Lobby

On behalf of my colleagues in Special Collections at Bailey/Howe Library, I would like to invite you to a reception for The Broadside Project. This semester, students in Jane Kent's "Projects in Printmaking" class created 10 unique broadsides to help celebrate our 50th anniversary.  The broadsides will be on display in the Bailey/Howe Library lobby from May 2-May 31.  The artists will be honored at the opening reception on Friday, May 4, 2012 from 5-6:30.

Dean's Council Minutes: April 10, 2012

I. SIP/SCPI

The Cost Structure/Productivity Improvement Committee has come up with 20 proposals. Sarah Gordon and Alison Armstrong represent the Libraries in this group. These proposals will first be reviewed by the full SIP Committee in a day-long retreat, Wednesday, April 11. Afterwards, they will be posted and circulated.

II. FY 13

The Libraries will receive a five-percent increase to the acquisitions budget again. No increase in the operating budget. Staff will receive 2-percent raises across the board. . Merit will not be awarded, but Sarah emphasized that evaluations are a valuable tool for staff and their supervisors.

III. Campaign Priorities

Billions of dollars of priorities were put forth by units. Nearly all will be forwarded to see which donors are interested.

IV. Libraries’ Goals Aligned with Strategic Plan and Initiatives

For the next meeting, council members have been asked to fill out the status row on a form about Libraries strategic initiatives and process alignment.

V. Online Distance Learning

BISK Education Inc manages recruitment and support for online degrees, and will do so with UVM. The Faculty Senate has approved a certificate for speech and language pathology, as well as in public health that will grow into a master’s degree. Also expected to be added are a master’s in environmental leadership and master’s in education.

VI. Staffing Changes/Searches

Nelson Sears has been hired as Dana’s business manager. He comes to the Libraries from the LGBTQA House, and has a broad range of experience. Andrea is helping out one or two days a week and will help with Nelson’s transition.

VII. PRIMO

There will be a discovery tool open forum on Friday, April 13 at 1 p.m. in BH Classroom 123. The tool can be tested at http://primotest.uvm.edu/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?vid=UVM

There will be other opportunities for feedback, as well.

The students in Jane Kent's Projects in Printmaking class are hard at work on creating a broadside portfolio to commemorate our 50th anniversary. We plan to hang them in Bailey/Howe Library around April 30, and would like to have a reception with light refreshments in the library lobby for the students.

FRIDAY FUN: Look Who Won the Lottery!

Amber Billey won the lottery to have her picture taken with President Obama! The even-better news is that Amber will be speaking about Open Source Software in Libraries, 12-1PM, Wednesday, April 18, in the Bailey/Howe Dean's Conference Room. She will explain what makes software "open source," the advantages and drawbacks of using open source software, various open source tools, and the future of open source in libraries. This talk promises to be interesting, and all are welcome and encouraged to attend! Feel free to bring your lunch. And maybe, just maybe, we'll take pictures of you with Amber!

Discovery Tool Open Forum on Friday

Hi Everyone,

We're looking forward to the Discovery Tool Open Forum on Friday, 1:00-2:30, in BH Classroom 123. In advance of the forum, please spend some time exploring the new tool:

Keep in mind that this is a work in progress (so please don't share the link beyond the library) and some things may be puzzling. For instance you may wonder:

• Can there be customization for the Dana Library (yes)
• What about a Reserves Tab (it's coming)
• In the results display, "Sorted By Date-newest" doesn't seem to work (Ex Libris is aware of that problem & is working on it)
  

You get the picture, we’re still working on it and we're counting on your questions and comments to help with the process. If you can't make it to the open forum, we welcome your questions and feedback through email or stop by and talk with anyone on the implementation team.
