JSTOR
Last week, faculty from the Classics department met with Mara, Selene,
Daisy and Peter about their concerns with the JSTOR Project. The meeting
launched a good conversation about space and collections. The meeting concluded
with more plans for consultation. Faculty will provide the Libraries with
journal titles they would like to retain. The other upshot is that the Faculty Senate
will discuss whether to create a library committee, which would be very useful.
Also, the Libraries will seek to reassure people that there’s room for
discussion as we proceed with the JSTOR Project. Mara thanked Selene and Peter
for considerable efforts on managing the Classics faculties’ concerns.

CatQuest
So far so good. CatQuest will be tested on a grad student history class
today at 4 p.m.

Switchover has been a non-event thus far.
IV.
Reference Space
The B/H I&IS Department sees a need to carve out a more-defined space
for reference consultation. Data shows the desire for greater in-depth
consultation. B/H Planning Group will come together to address master planning
and current issues within context of whole building. Some suggestions came out
of the Shepley Bulfinch feasibility plan, and will be revisited.
V.
Special Collections' 50th Anniversary
Special Collections’ 50th Anniversary Celebration will begin
at 5:30 p.m., September 21, in Billings North Lounge. Jeffrey Marshall
will introduce the speaker, Mark Dimunation, after Dean Saule and President
Sullivan give brief remarks. Mark is Chief of the Rare Books and
Manuscripts Division of the Library of Congress and from all accounts is a
terrific speaker. At 6:45, we will adjourn to the Apse for a reception
and champagne toast.
Special Collections and the Libraries are doing a full-scale publicity effort--we want to make a big splash, and the public is invited. Jeff says he is hopeful that we'll have a good turnout among the Friends of Special Collections, librarians from around Vermont, and donor prospects. But most of all, he hopes Libraries folks will come!

Timeline for Sabbatical Requests
Paperwork is due to department chair on Sept. 1; and, due in Provost’s
office by Oct. 1.

Many searches are underway in various stages. No announcements are ready.
VIII.
Strategic Planning
The Libraries’ current Strategic Plan expires in 2013. The Dean’s Council
will begin the process of reviewing and assessing what was accomplished. Incorporating
the new President’s plan will be important, as will be reviewing the strategic
plans of other departments, colleges, etc.
IX.
Risk Assessment Inventory
Mara and designees will meet with Al Turgeon to discuss the risk inventory
created by the Enterprise Risk Management group.

McCrorey Gallery
Mara met with Larry McCrorey’s family and together will re-energize the
programming and diversity efforts surrounding the Gallery and McCrorey’s legacy.
XI.
Distance Education
The University is moving towards online degrees/certificates. A
leadership group, including Mara, is working on the project. She will keep the
Libraries informed of progress, readiness and opportunities.
XII.
Institutional Repository
The Dean’s Council wants to take a
look at reviewing platforms to put an institutional repository in place. A faction
of the original IR group will make preliminary appraisals.
XIII.
Copyright Clearance Center
Mara met with UVM’s General Counsel on the matter. The Libraries will
work toward creating a central tool/policy to provide clarity to patrons.

Dana has an issue with a horrendous smell in two
offices. Deep cleaners couldn’t get out smell. Ozone machine now working on the
issue.

Jeff Marshall is at the National Archives today retrieving
items pilfered from Special Collections.
