DEAN'S COUNCIL MINUTES: Jan. 15, 2013

I.                    Leadership Development

The first half of the DC Meeting was spent working with Cortney Cahill on Leadership Development. The Council will participate in a retreat in February, in preparation for the next strategic planning process.

II.                  Libraries Facilities and Renovations

Mara, the Dean’s Office and Campus Planning are considering next-steps in possible B/H renovations. Mara will meet with Brian Reed in Provost’s Office at the end of January.

III.                ARL Status

Mara and Nancy spoke with a membership liaison at ARL about moving forward with seeking membership—a very lengthy, intensive and detailed process. The liaison encouraged us to wait until the 2012 numbers are crunched to see how we compare with those measurements.

IV.                Library Tour with FAC SEN LIB Committee

Mara, Peter and Selene gave the Faculty Senate Library Committee a tour of B/H that seemed to be very well received and informative in terms of how we operate.

V.                  ALANA Breakfast

The Libraries are hosting the ALANA Breakfast on Friday, Feb. 8. Sarah will be sending out a sign-up sheet and detailed information.

VI.                CATQuest

CATQuest implementation is wrapping up. Now, how to maintain CATQuest on a daily basis? The implementation team is accessing needs going forward.

VII.              LibQual

Selene will be organizing the LibQual Survey for April.

Ryan Edmonds: Gone but Never, Ever Forgotten

Dear Libraries Colleagues,

I am sad to share the news that Ryan Edmonds, who worked in Bailey/Howe's Circulation Department for several years, has passed away from complications due to Ovarian Cancer.

You can read more about her illness and the remarkable strength she showed throughout it, here at Caring Bridge. Please feel free to leave a message for her family in the Caring Bridge guestbook. Ryan and her wonderful partner Ben were married at the hospital in the final days of her life.

Ryan was a delight and a ray of light. Remember this cake she made for one of our holiday parties? The vibrancy of Ryan's Ridiculous Rainbow Cake captures her spirit perfectly.

Here's to you Ryan! You made our workplace and, indeed, the world better.

With love and admiration,

Nancy and Your Pals at the UVM Libraries

Donna O'Malley Talk: Digital Collection of Medical Student Research

Please join the Libraries' Staff & Faculty Development Committee next Wednesday, January 9 at 12:00 noon in the Dean's Conference Room when we welcome Donna O'Malley and her presentation on a "Digital Collection of Medical Student Research."

Here's a brief 'teaser' about Donna's talk:

All medical students at the UVM College of Medicine undertake scholarly research projects in collaboration with Vermont community agencies and UVM faculty advisors. In addition to fulfilling educational goals for the students, these projects contribute to improving the health of their community. The projects culminate in a scholarly poster presentation, after which the posters are rolled up and stored in the COM education office.

With the cooperation of the COM faculty member who directs the public health research class, I used this collection of posters to explore the role of the Dana Medical Library in creating digital collections. This presentation will describe decisions made in creating the collection and provide screenshots of public and private views of the repository.

Looking forward to seeing you next Wednesday!
